Some of the greatest artists of our time have relied on Vox amplification, including Brian May and The Shadows. The Vox digital range, however, isn’t just limited to Vox sounds, and includes all types of amp models such as Marshal, Fender and more. Vox has maintained the vintage aesthetics that the popular AC30 is known for on many of their digital ranges. They have been getting some great reviews all across the internet (specifically the VTX range and Adio), delivering impressive sound quality that rivals popular modeling based amplification.
The VTX Range
The VTX range features an actual 12AX7 tube in the preamp section to complement the Vox amp simulation engine, which is based on the analysis of real amp components and actual circuitry. This means the VTX range can produces a touch sensitive response that’s characteristic of a real tube amplifier. The VTX series also features a tightly sealed cabinet which produces accurate resonance. It can deliver the power to be used with a powerful rock band, and works well for live situations.

To the extreme right, notice that you have the option to directly change the bias (cold or hot) or shift between Class A or A/B. Just to the left of that, you have an option to connect an MP3 player. A headphone out is included below which can be connected directly to the PA system or used for recording. Note that the signal sent to the headphone out is derived directly from the power amp section which then has a cabinet response applied to it. In other words, you will probably achieve better quality by micing the amp.
The “Boutique OD” model is based on an extremely rare amp called a Dumble Overdrive Special. Robben Ford used one as well as Larry Carlton and many others. Robben claimed that he actually rented the amp up until he could afford the $12,000 price tag at the time.

Patches can be changed via the VFS-5 foot switch. It can also be used to tap tempo settings or turn effects on and off. It doesn’t come included, and will need to be purchased separately ($60). If you’re planning on playing live, you will probably need to look into getting one.

The Adio Air GT
The Adio Air GT was designed with portability in mind, specifically for jamming in public places, practicing at home and recording. It weighs only 2.9kg and is able to operate on batteries. It includes two 3″ stereo speakers. A nice feature is its ability to be operated via Bluetooth on your handheld device. Included is the same modeling technology as the VTX series, although a 12AX7 tube is not available with this line because it isn’t specifically suited for loud environments. The stereo output does, however, make for a great listening experience.

The Amplug 2 ($40) is a headphone amp that connects directly to your guitar. Included are 9 different amplifier presets as well as an auxiliary input. This is another great solution for practicing on the road, as it connects easily without a cable. It can work great for the tour bus or for situations when you don’t want to disturb your band mates. It’s sold in a variety of different models including AC30, classic rock, metal, lead, clean, blues and bass.

ToneRoom Preset Exchange
All Vox digital models that include a USB port (VTX, Adio and VX series) can access the Vox ToneRoom. This application allows you to edit, organize and exchange your presets. It’s compatible with Windows, Mac, iPad, iPhone and Android. You may find that by using this software it will be a lot easier to make quick adjustments to your amplifier settings.
